Parti & Massings

For our 3rd assignment, we had to analyze the plans and sections of our building typology examples and create a massing diagram and a diagram of what we thought/saw was the Parti.

For the parti diagrams, I used 2 basic colors, Red and Black, in order to distinguish the "center piece" of the parti and its basic forms. The color black shows the basic forms of the parti and the color red shows the "center piece" form(s) of the parti.

The massing diagrams were created using the sections of the typology examples and extracting the most basic shapes that make shape the overall massing.

  1. What I find interesting with your diagram is that as you defined using two colors; red and black, there are several color overlapping conditions of zones.

So, what is the difference between the dark black VS light black? What happens when the black overlaps with the red zone, or red overlapping another red (Newlands case doesn't seem to make sense then)? It seems like you are unconscious when you made this diagram but that is very important and interesting scenario in architecture.

The intersection of such two conditions can create an interesting catalyst (or mix) in program. I don't know if these were your intentions, but something to be aware of next time you create such diagrams. Nonetheless, discovery of these conditions can reveal another level of potential in your proposals.

Also, I want you to be more aware of Figure/Ground conditions. Given that you have diagrammed the "figure," what you have not seem to paid attention is the "ground" condition.

Figure, in this case, is your diagram focusing on interior conditions of the project. But remember that the exterior is also as important component of any architectural projects. Valley of Herault case then brings a question, I feel like that there is something going on within that field, which is as important of what is going on inside the building.

    1. Thank you for the comments on this posting. I have taken into account the comment on the overlapping colors and have started to reanalyze all the diagrams. I have been trying to come up similarities in each diagram with overlaps which in some cases are vertical circulation. I will update this post with my new diagrams and descriptions.
